I tackle issues of queer identity through
sculpture, abstraction, installation, video, and performance. Recently, I
have expanded my investigation of the male body by exploring the term ÒqueerÓ
as a point of entry. This term is inclusive and elusive. Previously, I
was directing my efforts towards surveying a specific gay male body
archetype, but now I find myself in new territory, where the term covers a
broader group yet at the same time remains adaptable to the fluctuations of
gender identity. My current work has cast me into a realm of the unknown,
where abstraction creates space for my limitations, while at the same time
allows me to perpetually materialize meaning. Reflecting on the expansiveness
of the term Òqueer,Ó I am developing three-dimensional, site-specific installation,
and performative work. Instead of representing a figure, I am more concerned
about engaging the viewer physically in a space. Moreover, I have also
been using coded bodies in immersive performance and site-specific
installation as a way to conjure queer sensibilities and anxieties. |
